Boxing Has Been A “Girl Fight” Long Before Movie

Julie Peavey, 40, of Vernon Hills, decided to take up boxing before she saw the movie "Girl Fight." Seeing it a week before her first lesson didn't change her mind about boxing, either. Peavey, a personal trainer and a competitive body builder since 1985, was looking for an outlet from the frustrations of owning a business. She liked the fact that the Gym had female members and that boxing seemed more immediate than other self-defense martial arts. However, it is different from body building. "Here you have to learn skills. That's hard to learn when you've just been strength building," she said. Peavey describes training as "very centering, really. When you're done, you feel very peaceful - if you have a good session." She doesn't think she'll take boxing to a competitive level. However, she hadn't planned on competing when she started body building. And she admits to being competitive.
